Hungarian authorities is planning to make distribution of genetically modified (GM) seeds a felony, an agriculture official said here Thursday, in its latest attempt to secure a GM-free country.

In a press conference held Thursday in Budapest, Lajos Bognar, Hungary deputy state secretary responsible for keeping track of the food chain, said the government was planning to introduce an amendment to the Penal Code, making distribution of GMO-contaminated seed a felony offense.

The development came just days after some 950 hectares of corn found to have grown with genetically modified seeds were destroyed throughout Hungary last week.

Bognar said as many as 2,500 hectares could have been contaminated by the GM seeds, and all must be destroyed, he said, adding that Hungary had zero tolerance for genetically modified organisms.
